Mike Murphy purchased Grower's Outlet from Bill Stamey and his wife Cherry on September 1, 2001. At that time, the business was located on Independence Blvd. in Charlotte, NC. Mike had been in the corporate world for several years and was anxious to not only get to the fresh outdoors but end the practice of going to the Charlotte Airport on Monday mornings.
The business stayed on Independence Blvd. until January 1, 2004. It then moved to Lowesville, NC, a little town located 22 miles north on busy Highway 16 on the southern tip of Lake Norman. The area showed promising growth, and continues to grow today at a pace faster than the state's average. The new retail outlet opened on April 3, 2004 as Mike's Growers Outlet. It doubled in size from the Independence location and also has an additional 6.5 acres for growing inventory and back-up stock. Mike's Growers Outlet has an inventory that includes one gallon plants up to 25 gallon. Many of the larger trees are stocked as ball-and-burlap. Most are now purchased in truck-load quantity allowing for very competitive pricing and the buying clout to receive the best of product. We stock not only the common gardening items but love to find the hard-to-find varieties.
